Charles C. McCormack, MA, MSW, LCSW-C...
Charles C. McCormack was born in Memphis, Tennessee into an armed services family and lived in different parts of the United States and Europe. He has worked a variety of jobs including mechanic; auto-body man; gas jockey; furniture mover; life guard at Assateague Island; runner at Phillips Crab House; warehouse man along side trustees from Lorton Prison, VA; manager of the import/export desk Merchant's International in Alexandria, VA; and accounting technician for the Department of Defense.
Along the way he obtained a BA degree in Economics and later a Masters Degree in Psychology, both from Loyola College of Baltimore. After beginning volunteering at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in 1974 and recognizing his love and aptitude for the mental health field, he obtained a second Masters Degree, this in Clinical Social Work from the University of Maryland.
After a few years he began writing and publishing professionally. His paper "The Borderline/Schizoid Marriage: The Holding Environment as an Essential Treatment Construct" was published in the prestigious Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy. Subsequently he was invited to join the faculty of The Washington School of Psychiatry's Couples and Family Psychotherapy Training Program and began presenting to professional audiences across the United States and Canada.
In recognition of his growing expertise Sheppard-Pratt Hospital promoted him to the position of Senior Social Worker of all 7 Adult Long-term Inpatient Units in 1988. In 1992, Mr. McCormack left the Hospital's employ for full-time private practice and teaching while continuing to maintain his office on its grounds. In 1994, in recognition of his achievements, Mr. McCormack was named the Clinical Social Worker of the Year by the Maryland Society of Social Workers.
In 2001 Mr. McCormack wrote a book: Treating Borderline States in Marriage: Dealing with Oppositionalism, Ruthless, and Severe Resistance (Jason Aronson, 2001). This book was well received and is currently used in several couples and family therapy training programs around the country. In 2002 he was invited to contribute to an audio tape series on the marital and family treatment of personality disorder entitled: Marital therapy. In The Borderline Personality, continuing education audio tapes, ed. B. Alexander. On Good Authority. Finally, in 2004 Mr. McCormack published a chapter to a book "An object relations approach to the understanding and treatment of the personality disordered marriage". In Family Treatment of Personality Disorders: Interpersonal Approaches to Relationship Change, ed. M. McFarland. Howarth Press (2004) that is now translated into Chinese.
At the present time, Mr. McCormack, has scaled back his writing and speaking activities and devotes himself mainly to the provision of couples and individual therapy services and supervision and consultation of other mental heath professionals.
